Abstract

Purpose: To assess the effectiveness of MRI-guided vacuum assisted breast biopsy (VABB), to evaluate and compare the lesion characteristics and histopathological findings of lesions which had undergone VABB and to overview the follow-up results of benign lesions.

 

Methods: Institutional ethics committee approval and informed consent form the participants were obtained. MRI findings and histopathological results of breast lesions, which had undergone MRI-guided VABB between 2013-2016 in our department, were retrospectively analyzed. MRI findings which closely related with malignancy were especially investigated. Follow-up results of benign lesions were evaluated.

 

Results: MRI-guided VABB was applied to 116 lesions of 112 women. Seventy five (65%) lesions had a benign result, 41 (35%) of them were malignant. Segmental distributed (94%), clustered (89%) and clustered ring (67%) non-mass enhancement were much more related with malignancy. False negative rate of MRI-guided VABB was 12%, underestimation rate was 21%. One of the 54 followed-up benign lesions had a malignant result.

 

 

Conclusion: The results of this study reveal that MRI guided VABB is a reliable method for the diagnosis of breast lesions which are positive only on MRI. Follow up results show that cancer detection rate is low for radiopathologically concordant lesions. Further multi-center studies with larger patient population are needed to elucidate these results.
